Why the name Word Flight and Light?
Excellent writing has a wonderful flow. The reader doesn't stumble on awkward phrasing or abrupt changes in thought. The words take “flight” off the page. Also, as an avid bird lover, the word flight recognizes our feathered friends. A photo of one of my favourite birds, the great blue heron, can be found in both the header photo and the Word Flight and Light logo.

And Light? Lighting can transform a picture from ordinary into extraordinary. Subtle adjustments to the ISO, shutter speed and aperture size will highlight hidden textures and warm tones. In the Word Flight and Light logo, the lines represent a camera's aperture focusing ambient light on the flight of a great blue heron.

Who is Rebecca St. Pierre?
As you can see from the black and white photo, I bonded with books at a young age. I wrote fictional stories, read Nancy Drew mysteries and loved Rupert Bear. As I grew older, I became fascinated with science, particularly fossils, rocks, dinosaurs and wildlife. I still cannot resist a lovely sedimentary stone. What I did not foresee is that my love of all things scientific and the written word would ultimately develop into not one but two careers: scientific research and freelance writing.

When the time came to select a field of study in university, I chose science over literature. Thanks to an Honours Bachelor of Science degree, I am a coauthor on eight, peer-reviewed scientific articles and have more than 20 years of experience conducting laboratory research at Western University and a biopharmaceutical company.

For a brief time, I helped introduce high school students to careers in medicine and health sciences while organizing nationwide events as the Discovery Day coordinator for The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. I support charities that advance cancer research and conserve wild animals, such as the Terry Fox Foundation and Salthaven Wildlife Rehabilitation & Education Centre.

When I’m not writing or taking photos, there’s a good chance you’ll find me reading a mystery novel, hiking in Pinery Provincial Park or tackling a challenging knitting project.
